Marks and spencer bosses say charges are the only way to cut plastic bags
Charging for plastic bags is the only way to deliver meaningful reductions in the billions handed out at tills every year, according to bosses at marks spencer.

It can be twice as effective as other initiatives such as removing bags from the end of checkouts, they say.

Marks spencer was the first major high street chain to introduce charging in may 2008 in response to the daily mail banish the bags campaign. It charges 5p for a food carrier.

Richard gillies, director of sustainable business at the retailer, said:Our experience, the only way to significantly reduce carrier bag use is to charge.

Precharging trials showed that initiatives such as reminding customers to reuse, and removing readily available bags from till ends, does work, but will only deliver a 3040 per cent reduction. To go to the next level 80 per cent plus we believe you have to charge.

The number issued by large retailers rose by 333million last year to 6.4billion, while the UK total is likely to be more than 10billion.

That equates to more than 380 per household. Most end up in landfill, while others litter towns, cities, parks and waterways.

The increase in bag numbers came despite claims from retailers such as tesco, sainsbury and asda that voluntary measures including putting them out of sight on checkouts would reduce the figure.

All stores in wales will have to add a 5p charge from october 1, a similar scheme is being put forward in northern ireland and there is political pressure in westminster and Pandora Charms UK scotland to follow suit.

Mr gillies said the fact that the number of bags issued rose last year showed why the debate over charging must be heard again.

The increase in bag numbers came despite claims from supermarkets such as tesco that voluntary measures, including putting them out of sight on checkouts, would reduce the figure

He added that m decision to impose charges in 2008 had been extremely difficult.

However, he said:Results were immediate and staggering. We hit an 80 per cent reduction within a matter of months. And thankfully, that level has been maintained ever since.

The number of carrier bags issued came down from more than 500million a year to around 90million, meaning almost one billion fewer have been used.

The chain takes no profit from the charge through which it has raised 4million for charity.

Mr gillies said:Has been reinvested back into community projects the length and breadth of the country with the creation of 100 green urban spaces that we can all benefit from.A winwin result.

The number of plastic bags given away by large retailers rose by 333million last year to 6.4billion, equating to more than 380 per household

Over the next three years, m will donate another 3million to help clean up britain beaches and support threatened species such as turtles and dolphins.

Mr gillies said:Our proven success, there are still people who question the environmental logic behind championing a carrier bag reduction campaign.

'They have many valuable arguments, but are missing an important point.

Is so vitally important about carrier bags is that it is an opportunity for customers to play their part.

All know that we need to learn to use the world resources more carefully and, as individuals, take action where we can.

Fewer carrier bags is an important change in behaviour that helps preserve the world precious natural resources. We just need to make it happen.

I'm really surprised at all the negative comments!Jo, eastbourne is absolutely right, no need for all those red arrows. In ireland, everyone keeps a few reusable bags in the car, or hanging beside your coats so you just grab them on your way out the door, we're all used to it here.

Francisca, france, it's true that you get little bags for your fruit for free, but come on, they're not the type you could fit a cereal box and a few tins into! Also, there's nothing silly about carring a bag or two with you on the bus to work.I fold mine up and keep it in my handbag. (While i'm wearing my good suit as well! )As you said yourself, it's not complicated, is it?Come on, people!
things to remember while moving

Hi guys.Asking you all another ot question since i love you all so much.Staying with family til the renovating is done. The new house is 16 minutes away and we'll be moving it all ourselves and probably slowly with family's suv and pickup.

But i'm wondering 1)What are things to remember to buy for a new house?I'm thinking things like shower curtain, trash cans, hangers, completely random things people forget about.

2)How would you try to budget for this? We'll have that random stuff, restocking the pantry, fridge, cleaning supplies(Plan to try making my own but it sure wont be during the moving process).

Since i'm low on babysitters, i can't help much with the reno, but i can organize the **** out of the rest of the process.

Curtain rods, blinds, extra trashbags, light bulbs, nails for hanging stuff, baby proofing stuff, outlet covers, mats for the doors, door stoppers was a big one for us, batteries for the smoke detectors, dryer vent, we had to get a conversion cord for the oven, and air filters.

A big help for us wss to color code everything. All boxes were marked with a colored sticker(Living room red, kitchen green, etc)And each room had a colored piece of paper taped to the door.So whoever unloaded boxes could put them in the room they belonged in.Made unpacking so much easier!

I would go by room. And make sure all windows have blinds or curtains.I would start with essentials then obviously move toward wants.

Kitchen trash can, dish towels, broom, mop, dish brush, dish drain, cookware, utensils, plates, bowls, cookie sheets, foil, parchment paper, dish soap, hand soap

Bathrooms towels, trash can, bathrug, tp, toilet brush, shower mat, hand soap

Other things a door mat, a place to hang coats/umbrellas.

General cleaning supplies for moving in maybe borrow a shop vac?I vacuum every inch of a new house, then i scrub it top to bottom.I use lots of paper towels, windex, all purpose cleaner, magic erasers, a good broom, oven cleaner and a good oven liner

Curtains/blinds to me were the most important thing.I hated the feeling of being on display. If you know where you are moving and the measurements you can look in advance. We built so i knew the window sizes and got blinds dirt cheap on clearance at target. For just temporary curtains a few options. One is bedsheets search on bbc, someone somewhere recently on this board or another one posted how they made panels out of bedsheets. When we were moving i found long lace panels for 25 cents each at a garage sale.Either will do ya til you know what you want for sure when you move in.

Echoing what pp said about first aid kit!

We were in the process of renovating our vacation / retirement house back in january and dh hurt his hand pretty badly(As in blood dripping all over the new floor)We realized we had nothing.Luckily the house is in the middl of a neighborhood that's all family so i was able to run over to an aunt's house and get some bandaids and alcohol. On the next trip to the store i picked up all the makings of a first aid kit.

A friend of ours told us the story of how when she and her dh were in the process of sprucing up the house they just bought from her fil she tripped down the stairs and cut her leg.The only thing they had in the house were maxi pads so that's what she used as a bandage until they could get to the hospital. If you have any concerns about your own health or the health of your child, you should always consult with a physician or other healthcare professional. Please review the privacy policy and terms of use before using this site.Your use of the site indicates your agreement to be bound by the terms of use.
